Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures is a 2016 American biographical drama film directed by Theodore Melfi and written by Melfi and Allison Schroeder, based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly about black female  mathematicians who worked at theNational Aeronautics and Space Administration  (NASA) during the Space Race.

The film stars Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Johnson, a mathematician who calculated flight trajectories for Project Mercury and other missions. The film also features Octavia Spencer as NASA supervisor Dorothy Vaughan and Janelle Monáe as NASA engineer Mary Jackson, with Kevin Costner, Kirsten Dunst, Jim Parsons, Glen Powell, and Mahershala Ali in supporting roles.

Principal photography began in March 2016 in Atlanta and was wrapped up in May 2016. Hidden Figures had a limited release on December 25, 2016, by 20th Century Fox, before going wide in the United States on January 6, 2017. The film received positive reviews from critics and grossed $236 million worldwide. It was chosen by National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2016 and was nominated for numerous awards, including three Oscar nominations (Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Spencer), and two Golden Globes (Best Supporting Actress for Spencer and Best Original Score). It also won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Κatherine J. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson are the three African-American NASA mathematicians who played an important role in the mission of John Glen in space. At the same time, they also gave a difficult fight for women's rights and civil rights in Virginia where racial segregation was in place. Nowadays, there is nothing strange about the fact that black women could handle such a mission and NASA clearly held a fairly realistic attitude to recognize it at that time. What was not necessarily obvious in 1962 was that "color computers" or "skirt computers", as they were called by NASA, deserved to enjoy the same rights and be treated with the same respect as their white male colleagues.

Κatherine Johnson, 98, today, a character played by Taraji P. Henson, lived long enough to see a black US president, but not a female army chief.

Octavia Spencer plays Dorothy Vaughan and singer, actor Janeel Mona plays Mary Jackson.

John Glen, who died on December 8th, is Glen Powell, who in a special screening of the film in New York last Saturday said he was grateful for the role and learned a lot about the legendary astronaut. John Glen was the first American in orbit around the Earth and the fifth man in space, after the cosmonauts Yuri Gagarin and German Tetov and his fellow Mercury Seven, Alan Shepard and Gus Grishom.

 Jim Parsons, who plays the role of NASA engineer Paul Staford (a fantastic face), said: "Glen is the reason we have this movie." He was the guy who said, "I do not care if she's a woman, I do not care if she's an African-American, I do not care who she is, as long as she has the mind to land me with safety".

Kevin Costner plays Al Harrison, director of NASA. The film was directed by Theodor Melphy in a script he wrote along with Alison Schroeder. "I wanted to dedicate this film to everyone in the world who have experienced bias all their lives, who have not been given a cup of coffee that did not get promotion, who did not get paid because of their skin color or gender " he said.

 Producer of the film is the well-known composer and singer, Farrell Williams, who also wrote songs for the film.

The film glories three women who, although have won awards and have had a successful career, have remained in footnotes and parentheses in the telling the story. It is a reminder that there are people whose contribution is very often in the shade.

Janelle Mona told Observer that the three women changed the image of a white male profession. "These women were told that their dreams are not acceptable because of their sex and skin color. But these two could not change. Jackson was a proud black woman, "she added. Mary Jackson fought in the courts to enroll in courses that would allow her to apply for NASA.

Η ταινία «Hidden Figures» παρουσιάζει την αληθινή ιστορία των τριών γυναικών μαθηματικών της NASA, οι υπολογισμοί των οποίων συνέβαλαν σε μερικά από τα μεγαλύτερα επιτεύγματα της Αμερικής στο διάστημα και εξερευνά μία άγνωστη πτυχή της ιστορίας των διαστημικών αποστολών, αλλά και τις φυλετικές εντάσεις και τις διακρίσεις με βάση το φύλο.

Οι Κάθριν Τζ. Τζόνσον, Ντόροθι Βον και Μέρι Τζάκσον είναι οι τρεις Αφροαμερικανές μαθηματικοί της NASA που έπαιξαν σημαντικό ρόλο στην αποστολή Τζον Γκλεν στο διάστημα.

Παράλληλα έδωσαν και μία δύσκολη μάχη για τα δικαιώματα των γυναικών και τα πολιτικά δικαιώματα στη Βιρτζίνια όπου ίσχυε ο φυλετικός διαχωρισμός.

Σήμερα, δεν υπάρχει τίποτα περίεργο στο γεγονός ότι μαύρες γυναίκες θα μπορούσαν να χειριστούν μία τέτοια αποστολή και σαφώς η NASA τηρούσε αρκετά ρεαλιστική στάση για να το αναγνωρίσει εκείνη την εποχή.

Αυτό που δεν ήταν απαραίτητα προφανές το 1962 ήταν ότι οι «έγχρωμοι ηλεκτρονικοί υπολογιστές» ή «κομπιούτερ με φούστες», όπως αποκαλούνταν από τη NASA, άξιζαν να απολαμβάνουν τα ίδια δικαιώματα και να αντιμετωπίζονται με τον ίδιο σεβασμό όπως οι λευκοί άνδρες συνάδελφοί τους.

Η Κάθριν Τζόνσον, 98 ετών σήμερα, χαρακτήρας που υποδύεται η Taraji P. Henson, έζησε αρκετά για να δει έναν μαύρο πρόεδρο των ΗΠΑ, αλλά όχι μια γυναίκα αρχηγό των ενόπλων δυνάμεων.

Η Οκτάβια Σπένσερ υποδύεται τη Ντόροθι Βον και η τραγουδίστρια ηθοποιός Τζανέλ Μονά την Μέρι Τζάκσον.

Τον Τζον Γκλεν, ο οποίος πέθανε στις 8 Δεκεμβρίου, υποδύεται ο Γκλεν Πάουελ, ο οποίος σε ειδική προβολή της ταινίας στη Νέα Υόρκη, το περασμένο Σάββατο δήλωσε ότι είναι ευγνώμων για το ρόλο και ότι έμαθε πολλά για τον θρυλικό αστροναύτη.

Ο Τζον Γκλεν ήταν ο πρώτος Αμερικανός σε τροχιά γύρω από τη Γη και το πέμπτο άτομο στο διάστημα, μετά από τους κοσμοναύτες Γιούρι Γκαγκάριν και Γκέρμαν Τίτοφ και τους συναδέλφους του στην αποστολή Mercury Seven, Άλαν Σέπαρντ και Γκας Γκρίσομ

Ο Τζιμ Πάρσονς ο οποίος ερμηνεύει τον ρόλο του μηχανικού της NASA , Πολ Στάφορντ (φανταστικό πρόσωπο) δήλωσε:

"Ο Γκλεν είναι ο λόγος για τον οποίο έχουμε αυτή την ταινία. Ήταν ο τύπος που έλεγε: Δεν με νοιάζει αν είναι γυναίκα, δεν με νοιάζει αν είναι Αφρο-Αμερικανός, δεν με νοιάζει ποιος είναι, αρκεί να έχει το μυαλό να με προσγειώσει με ασφάλεια".

Ο Κέβιν Κόστνερ υποδύεται τον Αλ Χάρισον, διευθυντή της NASA.Την ταινία σκηνοθέτησε ο Θίοντορ Μέλφι σε σενάριο που έγραψε μαζί με την Άλισον Σρέντερ.

«Ήθελα να αφιερώσω αυτό το φιλμ σε όλους στον κόσμο που έχουν βιώσει την προκατάληψη σε όλη τους τη ζωή, που δεν τους δόθηκε ένα φλιτζάνι καφέ, που δεν πήραν την προαγωγή, που δεν αμείφθηκαν όπως έπρεπε εξαιτίας του χρώματος του δέρματός τους ή λόγω φύλου» είπε.

Παραγωγός της ταινίας είναι ο γνωστός συνθέτης και τραγουδιστής, Φάρελ Γουίλιαμς, ο οποίος έγραψε και τραγούδια για την ταινία.

Η ταινία εξυμνεί τρεις γυναίκες που, αν και κέρδισαν βραβεία και είχαν επιτυχημένη σταδιοδρομία παρέμειναν σε υποσημειώσεις και παρενθέσεις στην αφήγηση της ιστορίας. 

Είναι μια υπενθύμιση ότι υπάρχουν άτομα των οποίων η συνεισφορά πολύ συχνά μένει στη σκιά.

Η Τζανέλ Μονά δήλωσε στον Observer ότι οι τρεις γυναίκες άλλαξαν την εικόνα ενός λευκού αρσενικού επαγγέλματος.

«Σε αυτές οι γυναίκες είχε ειπωθεί ότι τα όνειρά τους δεν είναι αποδεκτά λόγω του φύλου τους και του χρώματος του δέρματός τους. Όμως αυτά τα δύο δεν μπορούσαν να αλλάξουν. 

Η Τζάκσον ήταν μία περήφανη μαύρη γυναίκα», πρόσθεσε.

Η Μέρι Τζάκσον αγωνίστηκε στα δικαστήρια για να εγγραφεί σε μαθήματα που θα της επέτρεπαν να κάνει αίτηση για τη NASA.
