Robert John Downey Jr. (born April 4, 1965) is an American actor. His career has included critical and popular success in his youth, followed by a period of substance abuse and legal troubles, and a resurgence of commercial success in middle age.

Making his screen debut at the age of five, appearing in his father's film Pound(1970), he appeared in roles associated with the Brat Pack, such as the teen sci-fi comedy Weird Science (1985) and the drama Less Than Zero (1987). Other films he has starred in include the action comedy Air America (1990), the comedy Soapdish (1991), and the crime film Natural Born Killers (1994). He starred as Charlie Chaplin, the title character in the 1992 film Chaplin, which earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor

After being released in 2000 from the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison where he was on drug charges, Downey joined the cast of the TV series Ally McBeal playing Calista Flockhart's love interest. His performance was praised and he received a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries, or Television Film. His character was written out when Downey was fired after two drug arrests in late 2000 and early 2001. After one last stay in a court-ordered drug treatment program, Downey finally achieved sobriety. In 2015, Downey received a pardon from Governor Jerry Brown.

His more recent films include the musical comedy crime film The Singing Detective (2003), the supernatural horror film Gothika (2003), the crime comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), the animated science fiction thriller A Scanner Darkly (2006), the mystery thriller Zodiac (2007), and the satirical action comedy Tropic Thunder (2008), for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Beginning in 2008, Downey has portrayed the role of Marvel Comics superhero Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing in several films as either the lead role, member of an ensemble cast, or in a cameo. He played the title character in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes (2009) and its sequel (2011).

Downey has starred in several movies that have each grossed over $500 million at the box office worldwide. For three consecutive years from 2012 to 2015, Downey has topped the Forbes list of Hollywood's highest-paid actors, making an estimated $80 million in earnings between June 2014 and June 2015.

Downey was born in Manhattan, New York, the younger of two children. His father, Robert Downey Sr., is an actor and filmmaker, while his mother, Elsie Ann (née Ford), was also an actress, who appeared in Downey Sr.'s films. Downey's father is of half Lithuanian Jewish, one quarter Hungarian Jewish, and one quarter Irish descent, while Downey's mother has Scottish, German, and Swiss ancestry. Downey and his older sister Allyson grew up in Greenwich Village.

As a child, Downey was "surrounded by drugs". His father, a drug addict, allowed Downey to use marijuana at age six, an incident which his father has said he now regrets. Downey later stated that drug use became an emotional bond between him and his father: "When my dad and I would do drugs together, it was like him trying to express his love for me in the only way he knew how." Eventually, Downey began spending every night abusing alcohol and "making a thousand phone calls in pursuit of drugs".

When his parents divorced in 1978, Downey moved to California with his father, but in 1982 he dropped out of Santa Monica High School and moved back to New York to pursue an acting career full-time.

From 1996 through 2001, Downey was arrested numerous times on drug-related charges including cocaine, heroin and marijuana and went several times through drug treatment programs unsuccessfully, explaining in 1999 to a judge: "It's like I've got a shotgun in my mouth with my finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gun metal." He explained his relapses by claiming to have been addicted to drugs since the age of eight, due to the fact that his father, also an addict, had been giving them to him.

After five years of substance abuse, arrests, rehab, and relapse, Downey was finally ready to work toward a full recovery from drugs and a return to his career. In discussing his failed attempts to control his own addictive behavior in the past, Downey told Oprah Winfrey in November 2004 that "when someone says, 'I really wonder if maybe I should go to rehab?' Well, uh, you're a wreck, you just lost your job, and your wife left you. Uh, you might want to give it a shot." He added that after his last arrest in April 2001, when he knew he would likely be facing another stint in prison or another form of incarceration such as court-ordered rehab, "I said, 'You know what? I don't think I can continue doing this.' And I reached out for help, and I ran with it. You can reach out for help in kind of a half-assed way and you'll get it and you won't take advantage of it. It's not that difficult to overcome these seemingly ghastly problems...what's hard is to decide to do it."

Ο Ρόμπερτ Ντάουνι Τζούνιορ γεννήθηκε στη Νέα Υόρκη στις 4 Απριλίου 1965. Ο πατέρας του Ρόμπερτ Ντάουνι ο πρεσβύτερος είναι ηθοποιός, παραγωγός και αρκετά γνωστός σκηνοθέτης underground ταινιών. Η μητέρα του είναι επίσης ηθοποιός και έχει εμφανιστεί σε κάποια από τα έργα που σκηνοθετούσε ο πατέρας του. Ο ίδιος ο Ντάουνι ήρθε σε επαφή με την υποκριτική από την πολύ νεαρή ηλικία των 5 ετών, στην ταινία του πατέρα του Pound (1970) όπου υποδύθηκε ένα κουταβάκι.

Ο Ρόμπερτ Ντάουνι Τζούνιορ έμεινε στο Γκρίνουιτς Βίλατζ της Νέας Υόρκης μέχρι το 1978 και μετά τον χωρισμό των γονιών του μετακόμισε στην Καλιφόρνια με τον πατέρα του. Ωστόσο το 1982, σε ηλικία μόλις 17 χρονών παράτησε το σχολείο του στη Σάντα Μόνικα και γύρισε πίσω στην Νέα Υόρκη για να κυνηγήσει την καριέρα του ως ηθοποιός.
Το 1987, μετά από πληθώρα μικρών ρόλων υποδύθηκε έναν ναρκομανή στην ταινία Less than zero, του οποίου ο εθισμός του κατέστρεψε την ζωή. Η ειρωνεία είναι ότι την ίδια περίοδο ο εθισμός στα ναρκωτικά του ίδιου του Ντάουνι είχε αρχίσει να ξεπερνάει τα όρια. Για την ερμηνεία του αυτή απέσπασε πολύ καλές κριτικές και κέρδισε αναγνωσιμότητα, η οποία του επέτρεψε να συμμετέχει σε ταινίες μεγαλύτερου προϋπολογισμού, δίπλα σε γνωστούς ηθοποιούς, όπως τους Μελ Γκίμπσον,  Γούπι Γκολντμπεργκ και  Κέβιν Κλάιν.

Το 1992 υποδύθηκε τον Τσάρλι Τσάπλιν στην ταινία Chaplin και για την εκπληκτική του ερμηνεία εξασφάλισε μία υποψηφιότητα Όσκαρ Α’ ανδρικού ρόλου. 

 

Εν τω μεταξύ όσο μεγάλωνε η φήμη του, τόσο πιο έντονο γινόταν και το πρόβλημα του με τα ναρκωτικά. Για μια περίοδο από το 1996 μέχρι το 2001, ο Ντάουνι συνελήφθει πολλές φορές για κατοχή και χρήση ναρκωτικών και πέρασε από πολλά προγράμματα απεξάρτησης από τα ναρκωτικά, χωρίς επιτυχία όμως. Ο ίδιος έχει δηλώσει ότι είναι εξαρτημένος από τα ναρκωτικά από την ηλικία των 8 ετών, όταν ο πατέρας του – και ο ίδιος χρήστης – του έδινε να καπνίσει τσιγάρα μαριχουάνας. Το 1999 μετά από πολλές παραβιάσεις της αναστολής του καταδικάστηκε σε 3ετή φυλάκιση. Εξέτισε ένα χρόνο της ποινής του στις δημόσιες φυλακές της Καλιφόρνια για Τοξικομανείς και το 2000 αποφυλακίστηκε. Μια εβδομάδα μόλις από την αποφυλάκισή του, του έγινε πρόταση συμμετοχής στην επιτυχημένη δικηγορική σειρά Ally McBeal. Η συμμετοχή του, του εξασφάλισε μία υποψηφιότητα στις Χρυσές Σφαίρες και εκτόξευσε τα νούμερα της σειράς. Ωστόσο η συνεχής χρήση ναρκωτικών συνετέλεσε στην απόλυση του από την σειρά το 2001 και στοίχησε στον Ντάουνι πολλές ακόμη επαγγελματικές συνεργασίες. Είχε έρθει ο καιρός που ο Ρόμπερτ Ντάουνι Τζούνιορ έπρεπε να κάνει μια ουσιαστική προσπάθεια να εξαρτηθεί από τα ναρκωτικά, πράγμα το οποίο το κατάφερε το 2003 και με την βοήθεια του καλού του φίλου Μελ Γκίμπσον κατάφερε να ορθοποδήσει ξανά στον χώρο του κινηματογράφου.

Το 2008, αποδείχτηκε έτος σταθμός για τον ηθοποιό με τον πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο του στην ταινία Iron man, μεταφορά του γνωστού κόμικ στην μεγάλη οθόνη. To 2009 υποδύθηκε τον Σέρλοκ Χολμς στην ομώνυμη ταινία του Γκάι Ρίτσι και κέρδισε Χρυσή Σφαίρα για Α’ ανδρικού ρόλου για την ερμηνεία του.
Στην προσωπική του ζωή ο Ρόμπερτ Ντάουνι Τζούνιορ κατέστρεψε τις περισσότερες σχέσεις του λόγω του προβλήματος του με τα ναρκωτικά. Την δεκαετία του ’80 είχε σχέση για επτά χρόνια με την ηθοποιό Σάρα Τζέσικα Πάρκερ, η οποία όμως τελείωσε το 1991 λόγω του σοβαρού εθισμού στον αλκοόλ και τα ναρκωτικά. Το 1992 παντρεύτηκε την ηθοποιό και τραγουδίστρια Ντέμπορα Φαλκονέρ μετά από μόλις 42 μέρες σχέσης. Μαζί απέκτησαν έναν γιο, τον Ίντιο Φάλκονερ Ντάουνι. Τα προβλήματα του με τον νόμο είχαν ως αποτέλεσμα όμως να πάρει το παιδί τους η γυναίκα του και να τον εγκαταλείψει.

Ο Ρόμπερτ Ντάουνι Τζούνιορ είναι γνωστός για τις συντηρητικές πολιτικές του πεποιθήσεις. Όπως ο ίδιος έχει δηλώσει χαρακτηριστικά «Δεν μπορείς από την μία μέρα στην άλλη να πας από μία σουίτα ξενοδοχείο αξίας 2000 δολαρίων στην φυλακή και να βγεις μετά φιλελεύθερος».
